Schoffel are no slouches when it comes to quality ski wear, proving that it isn’t just the freeride brigade who can produce top performing equipment. Straight off the bat the Solden 3 feels every bit the high-end offering, with sublime attention to detail and excellent build quality – this is a ski jacket that will last a long, long time and that’s a relief as the initial investment is a hefty one at £680.
For that you get an understated, classy look in a soft and supple Dermizax fabric. We’re fans of this material as it offers excellent performance as well as 4-way stretch and crinkle free movement. Despite this it still achieves 20k/20k waterproofing and breathability which is decidedly top-end. Being an ostensibly piste focused ski jacket, the Solden 3 is also insulated, which is ideal for relaxing as much as you ski. Fill is Primaloft Gold which is the best of Primaloft’s line of synthetic insulation, it insulates very well for its weight, as well as being very breathable.
As you would fully expect all seams in the Solden 3 are taped and all zips are YKK Aquaguard. This ensures that you don’t suffer from gradual moisture creep through vulnerable areas of stitching.
Fit is close, but thanks to the 4-way stretch and articulated panelling the Solden 3 doesn’t feel claustrophobic, in fact freedom of movement is excellent. Arm and hem length is just enough to provide full coverage without the jacket looking uncouth and the overall styling echoes the sentiment of the jacket as a premium piste offering with only minor detailing and a solid block of colour. Comfort and coverage from the hood is also excellent, with a high, fleece backed collar and a touch of insulation to keep your head warm.
Pockets are plenty for most skiers needs with one on the lower arm for your lift pass, two hand-warmers, two chest and an inner pocket. You, of course get a snow skirt inside as well, although this is perhaps a moot point for most piste skiers unless you’re learning and likely to fall often.
Stretch wrist gaiters round off the offering, altogether making for a jacket that provides superior comfort and snug protection from snow, wind and cold weather.
Overall a classic piste jacket that’s impeccably built using an inspired choice of fabrics and materials. It won’t let you down and the inherent build quality should lead to years of happy, warm, dry skiing.
